A rapid charger draws as much power as a whole building

The charger is rarely the problem. The problem is the demand peak it creates, and the grid company’s bill that comes with it. We engineer charging installations where solar, battery and charging work as one — so the peak is softened instead of paid for.

How charging, the effekttariff and the battery fit together

A rapid charger in the 150 kW to 1 MW class draws power that lands straight on the effektledd — the capacity element of the nettleie (grid rent). The effektledd is billed on the highest hour of demand the site records each month, and one vehicle charging at the wrong moment can set that peak for the whole month.

The consequence is usually one of two: either you pay a capacity charge out of all proportion to the energy you actually use, or the grid connection has to be reinforced, with the cost and the waiting time that involves.

A battery between the grid and the charger solves both. The battery charges steadily whenever there is spare capacity, and delivers the peak when the vehicle is there. The grid sees an even draw; the charger gets full power. Add solar and the battery is charged in part by your own production.

What that smoothing is worth in kroner depends on your grid company’s rates. We have worked it through in detail under battery and energy storage, where the figures apply to a charging installation exactly as they do to a building.

We deliver the installation, not the charging service

That is a deliberate line, and it is worth knowing about before you choose a supplier.

  • What we engineer and build

    The electrical infrastructure up to the charger, the nettmelding (the grid connection notification) and the dialogue with the grid company, the battery and its controls, and solar where it makes sense. We take responsibility for the installation hanging together electrically.

  • What you choose yourself

    The charging operator and the payment solution. We work with partners and are glad to point you onwards, but we do not run the chargers and we do not sell the charging service — and so we do not promise uptime on them either.

  • The experience behind it

    We have delivered a battery-buffered charging park where around 500 kWh of battery in a container meant 35–40 charging points could be established without reinforcing the grid connection. That was standard AC charging, not DC rapid charging — but it is the same relationship between power, battery and grid.

Where the demand peak is the problem

  • Warehousing and logistics

    Large warehouse buildings and transport operators charging heavy vehicles. Here both the power draw and the roof area are large enough for solar and battery to make sense in the same delivery.

  • Vehicle depots and fleets

    Many vehicles to charge in the same window, often overnight. Steady charging through the night is exactly where a battery helps most.

  • Retail with customer parking

    Shopping centres and retail buildings that want to offer charging to customers, but already have a capacity charge and do not want to add another peak to it.

  • 01. Do you supply the chargers themselves?

    We engineer and build the installation around them — electrical infrastructure, the nettmelding, battery and controls. The charger, the charging operator and the payment solution are your choice, ideally made together with one of our partners.

  • 02. Have you delivered this before?

  • 03. How large does the battery need to be?

    It depends on how much power the chargers draw, how long they draw it for, and how much capacity your grid connection already has. We work it out from your own installation — it is not a number that can be guessed in advance.

  • 04. Can you promise uptime on the chargers?

    No. We do not run the chargers, and we will not promise anything about equipment we do not run. Uptime is something you agree with the charging operator you choose. On what we do deliver — the electrical infrastructure and the battery — we can offer a service agreement in the usual way.

  • 05. Do I need solar for a battery on the charging installation to be worthwhile?

    No. The battery softens the demand peak whatever the power comes from. Solar means part of the charging is covered by your own production, which improves the arithmetic, but it is not a precondition.
